The Ogaden drought needs urgent international attention(Dhanaan
editorial)

(Dhanaan.com): Ogaden is alarge region in Eastern Ethiopia
inhabited by mainly Somali speaking people. Geographically itis divided into 9 administrative Zones e.g Godey, Qorahay, Dhagahbuur,Fiiq,Wardheer, Jigjiga,Afdheer and Liibaan .These 9 Zones are subdivided further in to 52 districts. The population of the region is estimated to 4millions although the exact figure is not Known since a proper census wasnever carried out in the region.Nearly 80% of the population are nomadsand pastrolist and move from one place to another in search of pasture and water for their animals.

The region trades with the neigbouring Somali republic where they sell their animals and in exchange buy goods and medicines. There are normaly 2 rainy seasons in a year(The Gu' season and the Dayr season) which both failed.

The population's livelihood is mainly keeping of livestock such as
camel, cattle and goats and as you aware today their livelihood is greatly affected by the drought. The Ogaden people is facing severe drought where animals are dying in large numbers day by day, children malnourished and people are in the brink of starvation due to shortage of food and lack of access to water.

Ogaden is a conflict zone where government forces are battling with
Rebel forces fighting for independence hence hampering the access of
International NGOS in reaching the affected area where peaple are in
dire need of humanitarian food aid.

On behalf of the population in diaspora I would like to send a human
appeal to United Nations, the EU, the US and the NGOS to intervene and help in providing food and water to the starving population of the
Ogaden region.

In addition I urge my fellow community members in diaspora to create
donation centres where each and every one of us donates as much as
he/she can in order to alleviate the plight of our people by providing food and water.
