The delicate peace in the Somali region of Ethiopia.

Peace in the Somali region is a long awaited dream. The Somali region has suffered from decades of civil war, endless drought and corrupted officials in the regional administrative offices. On July 14, 2005 the Ethiopian government offered a peace deal to the Ogaden National Liberation Front. Astonishingly, the Liberation front accepted the offer with out any pre-condition to achieve lasting solution. The news is welcomed with optimism abroad and inside Ethiopia. Thanks to the Somali Region elders (Gurti) who have taken perilous tasks to restore peace and ensure truce between the government and the ONLF.

A light of hope has sparkled to Somali region and particularly to the troubled Ogadens who have been caught in the middle. The majority of peace loving Ogadens have been a victim for a long period, the Liberation Front are well known for labeling as anti-Ogaden those who disagree with their policy, on the contrary the Somali regional government and the non-Ogadens in power have used the ONLF as escape goat to assume absolute power in the Somali region by excluding the majority regions from the power. Furthermore the Somali region undergoes a land transfer from Somali regional state to Oromo regional state that has resulted new conflicts in bordering towns.

It has been two weeks since the ONLF has released a statement indicating that they are ready to hold peace talks in neutral country. The ONLF leaders are meeting in Denmark, July23, and 24 to discuss the new development and to stargazing techniques for the widely anticipated negations. The Ogaden community in Europe and North America are preparing to welcome Part of the elders (Gurti) who are traveling abroad to engage dialogue with ONLF and Diaspora community.

While the Ogaden National Liberation Front leaders are actively engaged in terms of getting ready for dialogue with central government of Ethiopia, towns in the Somali region, namely Jijiga, Fiiq and Dagahbur have witnessed a pre-calculated assault on July, 25 and 27 by groups aiming to undermine the premature hope of dialogue yet to be commenced in order to remain in power. Small minority groups who have benefited from the instability are aligning themselves now with Mogadishu warlords. The Mogadishu warlords who regard Ethiopia as backbone to Abdulahi Yusuf government have strong animosity and are striving to destabilize the region. Since the warlords have been backing the ONLF and using them as an instrument to fulfill their revenge, the emerging inattentive of hope would cast a shadow on their original plan. Therefore the warlords and their allies in the region are forced to shift tactics and to utilize group who will be drastically affected by the change.

Any agitation to destroy the peace process at the cost of innocent human life would be contra productive. Old tactics of accusing others for own deeds should not be acceptable or tolerated at all. Individuals who are in power today in the Somali region are responsible for the recent attacks in the Somali region. The majority of the Somali region population is determined to change the prevailing predicaments, instability that has become the permanent feature of the Somali region. Change for better is inevitable. The quest of peace has to be extended to address the root causes of the insecurity. Both the government and the Liberation Front have to be vigilant to make sure sustainable peace and tranquility is achieved in the region.
