»Is Somalia heading to vanish from the World’s Political Map?
Somalia has been in total turmoil and chaotic situations, for the past 20 years, due to the absence of the effective national government. Where hundreds of thousands of civilians had been killed, in horrific ways, while tens of thousands were wounded, mutilated, disabled, and disappeared. And other millions and millions of Somalians fled their home land and scattered all over the world with the aim of seeking sanctuaries.


Who are to blame for the ongoing destructive civil war, carnage and disintegration of Somalia?
It is undeniable fact that the former United Somali Congress (USC) /warlords were responsible for the disintegration of Somalia in to cantons and many tiny clan administrations, and grave consequences of the on-going intractable civil war which was launched by them.

Promptly, the USC/warlords had engaged in ethnic cleansing operations, targeting specific clans for revenge, through mass killings, rapes and abductions. While it also involved in large scale looting and destruction of basic social and economic infrastructures and utilities of the country. Top on that the USC/warlords who had fragmented and divided in to several tribe, and sub-tribe based warlords’ factions, plunged in to intra-factional fighting for the control of the country’s wealth and resources for their own personal interests by putting the nation on dangerous path.


In deed the warlords were first to blame for launching the campaign for the carnage, while the Al-Shabab militant-Al-Qaeda linked group, is fully responsible for prolonging the campaign of ethnic cleansing and carnage in Somalia, where it committed and continue to commit systematic crime against humanity, genocide and war crime. The extremist group had ruined the remaining economic and social infrastructures, precious antiquities and Islamic holy shrines, in the name of Islam, with the objective of disfiguring the country’s cultural, social, religious, and political landscapes.


The sad fact in this regard is that those perpetrators are today living in luxurious life, without facing justice, while the survivors of Somali holocaust and families of the deceased citizens, are agonizing in a broken and sorrowful life, and suffering from the effects of unforgettable tragedies.
It is a plain fact that all unscrupulous Somali politicians have had the lion’s share for the responsibility of the existing disastrous situations in Somalia, for the past 2 decades, due to their complete failure of finding a lasting political solution to the bloody civil war. Because of their opportunistic and individualistic attitudes and practices.


Remember, in this respect, that around 20 peace and reconciliation conferences were held, and several transitional governments were formed, under the auspices of UN, AU and Arab Leaque’s member countries. Unfortunately, all those peace initiatives had failed to stop the on-going carnage. There is no doubt that the international community itself can’t scape the blame for the on-going bloody hostility in Somalia, as a result of not giving enough attention to the problem of the war-ravaged country.


What are the major obstacles to resolving the intractable Somali conflict?
In my view, although Somalia is facing the war-induced multifaceted daunting challenges, the major obstacles to finding political settlement, can be summarized in to 3 categories, Firstly, actually what is the most dangerous threats, facing Somalia today, is the birth of Al-Shabab and its evil ideology, which was designed to ruin Somalia as a country and nation and replace it with international terrorist state that definitely will pose tremendous security threats not only to the East Africa, but also to the rest of Africa and international community as a whole.


Remember, in this regard that Al-shabab is spreading the suicidal culture among Somali Society, Specially, the teenagers aged 13-19 years old, through brainwashing and recruiting them as regular forces for suicide bombers, the practices contradict the true Islamic teachings and Somali culture. Secondly, the former warlords, and all unscrupulous Somali politicians created deep rooted warmongering cultures and attitudes by adopting “kill to become rich policy”.

These dangerous attitudes which had already plagued all segments of Somali Society are ones of the major obstacles to peace and stability in Somalia. Based on their policy for “divide and rule,” the unscrupulous Somali politicians are using tribe and tribalism, as weapons and ladders to enable them to achieve their personal interests, rather than the interest of the tribe, by sowing discord among Somali society and clans, with the purpose of not restoring law, order, and tranquility, which they believe it threats their personal interests. As long as these greedy Somali politicians, are insisting to fight against each other for their only personal gains rather than national interests, it is very difficult to end Somali crises in short period. Thirdly, actually there are international organized criminal gangs, drug trafficking groups, illegal companies, terrorist organizations and unscrupulous Somali pirates, who have deep and strong common economic interests, to fuel the conflict in Somalia.


The on-going and endless power struggle between Somali executive and legislative bodies, for personal interests, is a vivid example for Somali Politicians’ greediness for wealth and power, and their indifference to the crises of their country. They are engaging in these vicious practices, and political game, when the people of Somalia are laboring and agonizing in blood baths, hunger, abject poverty, and incurable traumas, on daily basis, as a result of the raging conflict, in the war-torn Horn of African country.


I think, every body agrees that, Somalia has reached unacceptable situation, where the national pride, sovereignty and dignity of Somalia and Somali people, are lost, discredited, traded and violated, by the Somalians themselves. Consequently, Somalia is heading to vanish from the world’s political map unless the patriotic and committed Somalians save it, from falling in to abyss.


I believe that the devoted and determined Somalians, with effective and serious support of the International community, could end the devastating civil war and carnage in Somalia.


In this connection, the compassionate international community, is required to support and empower the devoted Somali intellectuals and Somali women, who are free from the traditional endemic viruses of the Somali politicians, so they could exhume and reinvent new Somalia, which enjoys peace and stability, and desires to live in peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the neighboring countries and international community as a whole.
