»The untimely demise of Lugbuur has taken us all by surprise.By Waddani
The sudden sacking of Abdulahi Hassan Lugbuur from the post of the presidency was shocking even by region five's standard. After all this was the guy whom we let to believe had all the ears and attention of Meles to himself and rightly or wrongly earned the "untouchable" status in the region.

Now the question is why the "bull terrier" become a puppy and untouchable became soft touch in overnight. To answer this question objectively you need to understand two things;

1. The complex structure of the powerbrokers in the region.

2. The character and the judgement of the man himself.

In region five there are various stakeholders albeit with unequal authorities, on one hand you have got the security/intelligence and military apparatus under single military commander, taking direct order from the office of the prime minister.

On the other hand you have the office of the president, the leader of the ruling party and what I call the "Implementers" these are the barbarians, the primitives, the immoral who without dignity harass, mass-arrest and torture the innocent men and women in the street. ( good example of these nasty and horrible individuals are Daud Mohamed Ali and his blood-thirsty friend Abdi Mohamed Omer (Abi Iley)).

Having explained the dysfunctional nature of the powerbrokers in the region, let us now look at the man himself and try and address the reason behind his sudden demise.

Lugbuur has surprised many political insiders in the region including myself, when he was selected as the president of the Somali state three years ago, simply because the smart money wasn't on him, he was widely seen as an underdog in the contest at the time .

As soon as he come to the office, some of his opponents including those he defeated in the race has predicted that he will be even worst than all his predecessor combined, by simply pointing out his cross-cultural marriage background and questioning his loyalty to serve the best interest of his people.

To be fair to him he started brightly by trying to reach out his foes across the aisle, he travelled extensively to abroad and lectured the region's Diaspora about his new administration, that he is unique unlike his predecessors he will lead and listen, that he will appoint his ministers by merit and will work hard to bring peace and stability to the region as a whole.

One year into his administration, suddenly things looked somewhat brighter, some of his ministers were implementing projects, which has never been implemented before. On the security front there a glimpse of hope, when self-motivated, genuine but poorly organise with a flimsy agenda council of elders started currying shuttle diplomacy in Europe and North America (no prize for getting what become of this)

Fast forward to Lugbuur's final year of his three years as president, after witnessing what can only be termed as the worst period in the history of the region in terms human right abuses, misuse of power and public resources and chronic lack of social developments. Lugbuur started to have a prickly relationship with his loyal friends, he become emotional and defensive, he started rushing and proposing shocking bills to be passed by the state legislatives, such as making Friday as an official working day and changing the star emblem on the region's flag. Other irrational behaviours, which flew the face of his earlier promise that he will "appoint competent ministers and civil servant " was when he started recruiting college dropouts from north America, whose credentials were only to write articles with an apologist tone praising his regime and to that of his master ( Meles), as consultants and political advisors. In the beginning of September, there unconfirmed reports that he was summoned to attend a crisis meeting with Meles in Addis. We may never know whether such a meeting has ever taken place, but what we know for certain is, that was the end of lugbuur's reign as a president of Somali state.

In summary, how will he be remembered? Every body, friend or foe can have their opinions, but to me among other things the highlights of Abbulahi Hassan's administration, will be the shocking interview he gave a British Journalist Jonathan Rugman, were he preposterously claimed all the food aid were reaching " the targeted people" as he put it, when the same journalist and his camera man few blocks away were filming a humiliated woman with famished children.
