»Ethiopia Won’t Starve Its Own People. By Khalif Gariile
It was with great disappointment that I read the comments of His Honorable Douglas Alexander, Secretary for International Development of Britain, to withhold future aid commitments to Ethiopia over the alleged removal of malnourished children and their mothers from the hospital in Kebri Dehar before his arrival, on Telegraph and The New York Times. The Secretary seemed to be fed up with inaccuracies and unchecked hearsays from folks with hidden agendas.

Both Newspapers reported that the Secretary’s comments were based on statements received from unnamed individuals that claimed to be aid workers in Kebri Dehar town of Somali Regional State. The Secretary ought to double check his information before making it public, since the moral credentials and the true motives of these individuals are unclear. The fact is that the government of Ethiopia has no need to starve its own people and there is no reason, whatsoever, one should even think of this to happen.

Notwithstanding, both Somali Regional State and the Federal government, together, had undertaken various development programs, such as health, education, electricity, telecommunication projects, road constructions and another necessary infrastructures in this particular area, with the aim to better the lives of the communities there. Then one should ask him/herself the validity of the earlier statement. Developments and destructions don’t go hand in hand.

The Honorable Secretary has undisturbed access to the senior officials in both the Regional and Federal governments, hence the Secretary could have checked out his information for accuracy before coming to any conclusion.

While, as emerging democratic society, we are open to views, suggestions and even criticisms, I’m bewildered by the considerations and remarks made by Secretary Alexander, which was totally based on fabricated lies. The important role of the British government in development programs in Ethiopia is clearly recognized by the people of Ethiopia in general and the people of Somali Regional State in particular; therefore, it is my expectation that the well respected office of the Secretary will acquire adequate study on this matter before final decision is made.
