A NATION MOURNS ITS NATIONAL HERO

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST MERCIFUL THE MOST GRACIOUS

It’s often said to be somewhat therapeutic to express your feelings of grief in writing. I have decided to put that theory to the test and try to give a glance into mine and most people’s feelings of sorrow in this grimmest of times. It’s obvious we are a Nation in mourning, a People engulfed in a state of bereavement. To quote one famous writer/scholar, “In this cry of pain the inner consciousness of the people seems to lay itself bare for an instant”. Personally, I can say I’m in the latter stages of what psychiatrists call the (grief cycle); from shock to disbelief and denial, to yearning and searching, and last to despair, numbness and acceptance. Initially I clung to the hope that it was just a bad nightmare and i would wake up one morning and hear his fearless forceful voice on the BBC saying to the newsreader “I am in the middle of Ogadenia walaale” as he would say. But with each bleak morning came the sad undeniable reality.

Although i had met the late Dr.Dolal on a couple of occasions, I can’t say i knew him on a more personal capacity even though he was closely acquainted to the family. Nevertheless, I feel an immense sense of personal loss. To say the least, and I’m sure i speak for many when i say this, i miss the guy terribly. And the reason is because we shared the same aspirations of a greater cause. I have not made great sacrifices as the late Doctor had made in order to further this cause, but we sure shared the same dream, the dream for which he paid the ultimate price. And the fact that he did not live to realize his dream of living freely in his own country, is another painful thought to bear. If it is any consolation to all those mourning his loss, the doc was tested and did not waver and died honourably true to his belief to the last breathe. I cannot begin to imagine what it feels like to lose a father or a husband, so our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they go through these very dark days. We can only assure them that they are not alone in their mourning, that we the people too have lost a national treasure. We pray that Allah Almighty may accept his martyrdom and may Allah brighten and widen the tomb for him. Amin, Amin.

Finally, personally i am not particularly interested in politics at all. But i am very much interested in the facts. And the facts speak for themselves; (a) that (Dr.Dolal may Allah have mercy on his soul), was a freedom fighter who martyred readily serving his country and a one of a kind hero who will be taught in the history books of his beloved Ogadenia for years to come.
(b) Dr.Dolal in my opinion was the face of ONLF. Some may disagree but the fact that he lived and died ONLF is indisputable.

The doctor has martyred like all the other martyrs before him, but his dream will stay alive because we owe it to him and all those who sacrificed their lives for this dream that is yet to be achieved. So the job is not yet done, it is up to you and I to see it through.
